Who we are

We represent Jews and Jewish communities across Europe who seek a contemporary, inclusive, and values-driven expression of Jewish life. Rooted in tradition and open to contemporary realities, we support communities, leaders, and institutions working to shape a vibrant Progressive Jewish future in Europe.

Our Values

Equal participation

Progressive Judaism is rooted in the belief that every person should be able to take a full and meaningful part in Jewish life. We are committed to equality in religious practice, community leadership and decision-making. Across our diverse European communities, we support the participation and leadership of people of all genders and backgrounds. Egalitarianism is not simply a principle we affirm; it shapes how our communities pray, learn, lead and grow together. By widening participation, we strengthen Jewish life and ensure that more people can contribute their experience, knowledge and commitment to our shared future.

A place for everyone

We want Progressive Jewish communities to be places where people feel welcome, respected and able to belong. Our communities include people with different backgrounds, identities, family structures, abilities, experiences and levels of Jewish knowledge. We recognise that inclusion requires more than an open door: it means creating communities in which people can participate fully and authentically. Across Europe, we encourage our members to listen, learn and remove barriers to participation. Our diversity enriches Progressive Jewish life and helps us build communities rooted in dignity, mutual responsibility and a genuine sense of belonging.

Building Jewish life for the future

We are committed to a strong and lasting Jewish future in Europe. Jewish continuity means enabling people to encounter Judaism, deepen their Jewish lives and pass traditions, knowledge and values from one generation to the next. We support communities that provide meaningful opportunities for prayer, learning, celebration, leadership and connection throughout people’s lives. At the same time, continuity is not about preserving Jewish life unchanged. It means giving each generation the confidence and resources to engage with our tradition and carry it forward in ways that are both authentically Jewish and meaningful in the world in which we live.

Open to new possibilities

Progressive Judaism has always understood Jewish tradition as living and evolving. We value creativity, thoughtful experimentation and the willingness to find new ways of strengthening Jewish life. Across Europe, our communities respond to changing circumstances, new technologies and the needs of different generations while remaining rooted in Jewish values and tradition. Innovation may take many forms: new approaches to learning and worship, new ways of connecting communities across borders, or new models of leadership and participation. We encourage ideas that help Jewish life flourish and make meaningful engagement possible for more people.

We believe Judaism speaks powerfully to the world we live in. Progressive Judaism brings Jewish tradition into an active conversation with contemporary knowledge, experience and society. We engage seriously with inherited texts and practices while recognising that Jewish life continues to develop in response to changing circumstances. This approach allows our communities to remain rooted in tradition without being bound by the past. Across Europe, we seek to create Jewish life that is thoughtful, relevant and confident: grounded in our heritage, responsive to the present and equipped to meet the questions and opportunities of the future.

We are represented in the governing bodies of the National Institutions of the State of Israel by arzenu – the political voice of Reform, Progressive and Liberal Religious Zionists.

We are one of the seven regions of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) with its headquarters in Jerusalem – the largest movement of affiliated Jews in the world with 1.8 million members.

Organisation Overview

The European Union for Progressive Judaism (EUPJ) is a membership-based charitable organisation and a European network for Progressive Jewish life. Established in 1967, EUPJ brings together national movements, congregations and affiliated institutions across Europe. We foster cooperation, shared learning and collective representation. Our network links more than 170 Liberal, Progressive and Reform communities in 17 countries. By connecting communities across borders and helping them share knowledge and expertise, we enable our members to learn from and strengthen one another.

Our Staff Team

While most of the work of the organisation is carried out by volunteers, we are grateful to be able to rely on the professional support of an office manager as well as the convenor of our Beit Din, who is the main contact for questions regarding conversions in Europe.

Governance

The EUPJ is governed by its Constitution, which provides for three bodies to be responsible for the EUPJ – the European Assembly, the Executive Board and the Management Committee. The current Constitution was adopted in April 2018.

The Management Committee is responsible for EUPJ’s day-to-day work and for implementing its policies and strategies under the supervision of the Executive Board. Its members are drawn from across Europe, reflecting the diversity of our membership.

The Executive Board

European Assembly

The European Assembly is EUPJ’s governing body. It normally meets once a year to consider the organisation’s work and elect officers to fill any vacancies. The Assembly may also consider and adopt resolutions setting out EUPJ’s position and helping our members to advance EUPJ’s mission. The European Assembly is constituted in accordance with the Schedule of Constitution Delegates.
