Our Leadership & Governance

Organisation Overview

The EUPJ works to foster and stimulate the growth of Progressive Judaism throughout Europe because we believe that Progressive Judaism, with its combination of respect for Jewish tradition and openness to modernity, provides the blueprint for Jewish continuity in the 21st century. The EUPJ is the umbrella organisation linking and supporting more than 170 Liberal, Progressive and Reform communities in 17 countries, with new communities regularly seeking membership. Our continued growth across Europe is testament to the fact our approach unites Jews who want a non-fundamentalist, inclusive, egalitarian and modern interpretation of Judaism. The EUPJ is one of the seven regions of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) with its headquarters in Jerusalem which is the largest movement of affiliated Jews in the world with 1.8 million members

European Assembly

The EUPJ is governed by the European Assembly, which normally meets once a year to consider the work of the EUPJ and its members since the previous meeting of the European Assembly and to elect officers to fill any vacancies. It’s objectives are to discuss and promote the development of Progressive Jewish communities in Europe and in support of Israel and the WUPJ and to consider and, where appropriate, adopt resolutions setting forth the position of the EUPJ and to better enable members to carry out the mission of the EUPJ. The European Assembly consists of the following persons (all of whom must be Jewish according to the EUPJ Constitution) – The President, all Honorary Life Presidents and All Vice-Presidents, the Chairman, the Vice-Chairmen, the Honorary Treasurer, the Honorary Secretary, all voting members of the Executive Board, any person co-opted by the European Assembly and the delegates appointed by EUPJ members and associated bodies referred in the Schedule of Constitution Delegates.

Governance

The EUPJ is governed by its Constitution, which provides for three bodies to be responsible for the EUPJ – the European Assembly, the Executive Board and the Management Committee. The current Constitution was adopted in April 2018. The European Assembly usually meets once a year, the Executive Board meets three to four times a year and the Management Committee meets monthly. In addition, sub committees are formed as and when required for specific projects and their work results in recommendations to the Executive Board and/or the Management Committee. Members of the Executive Board are also elected to represent EUPJ interests at the International Assembly of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ). The EUPJ President, Chairman, Honorary Officers and other senior office holders are elected to these positions by the European Assembly, whilst the remaining members of the Executive Board and the Management Committee are appointed to their positions in terms of the Constitution. Many of the members of the Executive Board are appointed to represent EUPJ’s regions and national bodies across Europe as well as the Abraham Geiger Kolleg, the Leo Baeck College, the European Bet Din (EBD), the EUPJ European Rabbinic Assembly (ERA) and the WUPJ
